Parent: “I don’t want to be a helicopter parent.” Moving forward on myths of college parents.
KnowYouGo agrees with that thinking, that is NOT what KnowYouGo was created to do. We do not monitor, report or record their location any time other than what you build into the schedule. Our service only checks on students at specific class times to see if they are in the right location. The student is not being spied on. They are aware of the app and agree to the days, times, and locations that will be checked. They also will know that there is not a means for a random check from their parents at other times. The system gives them the freedom of college with the accountability for going to class. Allowing students room to grow and enjoy the freedom of college life can be a good thing. The freedom to choose how often to go to class can be one area that students abuse their freedom. Talking with other students reveals that it is a major problem. Some report seeing classmates the first day of class and then not seeing them again until the first test date. Some may be able to overcome that type of attendance but most will not. Those poor choices can cost them academically and you financially. The win/win solution is to allow them to enjoy college socially and personally with real freedom while holding them accountable for class attendance. The desire to give them freedom should not outweigh the purpose for them being enrolled: to get an education. The best way for them to accomplish that goal is to go to class. KnowYouGo helps make that happen. There is no need to apologize for trying to make sure your student is living up to your expectations. Get the information you need to be a good responsible parent, not a helicopter parent.
