The result of holding college students accountable
The number one goal of KnowYouGo is to improve students’ attendance. It is human nature to perform better when you are held accountable for your actions. KnowYouGo is electronic accountability. We hope that the accountability will cause students to attend so well that it will appear that our service wasn’t needed. The truth is some parents may never know the problems our service helped prevent.
The expected result of improved attendance is improved grades. Because attendance is the number one predictor of academic success, we believe students who use our app will have better grades as a result. That may be a matter of preventing failing classes or less noticeably just improving a letter grade here and there. Either way, it is a benefit that can make a real difference for them.
An additional benefit of the app is that it will help students at the beginning of their academic career to develop good habits regarding class attendance. If the decision is made to stop using the app, hopefully, they will have learned how to be good students with dependable class attendance habits.
Beyond the educational benefits, there is the peace of mind that parents will have as well. Knowing your student is safe and doing what you are expecting is a good thing. Some may not communicate as well as parents would like, and this is a way of knowing there are no issues preventing them from doing what you have trusted them to do.
No doubt, some parents want to take a wait-and-see attitude regarding attendance problems. We believe the adage that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. The price of being wrong is pretty steep. Not every parent with that approach will be incorrect, but some will. Why risk it? Everyone knows stories of kids who wasted time and money by performing poorly at college. Some overcame it. Some did not. In every case, it is doubtful that the parents saw it coming. Assuming it won't happen to your student could be costly to you and them.
